Consumer Products
(CPSC & FTC)

The term ‘‘consumer product’’ means any article, component or part thereof, produced or distributed (i) for sale to a consumer for use in or around a permanent or temporary household or residence, a school, in recreation, or otherwise, or (ii) for the personal use, consumption or enjoyment of a consumer in or around a permanent or temporary household or residence, a school, and in 
recreation.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is a US Federal Agency appointed to promote the safety of consumer products by addressing "unreasonable risks" of injury. Within the bestowed authority:

  • The CPSC collects, investigates, analyzes, and disseminates injury data, and information, relating to the causes and prevention of death, injury, and illness associated with consumer products.

  • The CPSC conducts studies and investigations of deaths, injuries, diseases, other health impairments, and economic losses resulting from accidents involving consumer products as it deems necessary.

  • Following the publication of a notice of proposed rulemaking, CPSC assists public and private organizations or groups of manufacturers, administratively and technically, in the development of safety standards addressing the risk of injury identified in such notice; and

  • To the extent practicable and appropriate, the CPSC assists public and private organizations or groups of manufacturers, administratively and technically, in the development of product safety standards and test methods.
